Customers increasingly ask AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot — for recommendations the way they used to ask Google. Here’s honestly how those answers get made, and what a local business can do about it.
Where AI answers come from
There’s no ranking you can buy and no registry to join. When someone asks an assistant “who’s the best plumber near me,” the answer comes from two places:
- What the model learned in training — a months-old snapshot of the public web: review sites, directories, articles, forums.
- Live web retrieval — most assistants now quietly run a web search, read what comes back, and paraphrase it. What comes back is the familiar cast: Google Business Profile data, Yelp and industry directories, “best X in Y” roundup articles, Reddit threads, and business websites.
Both paths lead to the same conclusion: an AI recommends a business that keeps showing up, with good marks, across independent sources it can read.
The five moves that actually work
- 1. Collect Google reviews, steadily. Review volume, recency, and rating are among the signals AI answers most visibly draw on. This is the core loop ReviewLoft runs for you: QR scan → every customer asked → Google review.
- 2. Be everywhere AIs read, under one exact name. Claim and complete Google Business Profile and Bing Places (some assistants lean on Bing’s index), Yelp, and the directory for your trade (Healthgrades, Avvo, Houzz, TripAdvisor…). Use the identical business name everywhere — an AI can’t recommend what it can’t recognize as one business.
- 3. Get into “best of” articles. Local blog and city-magazine roundups are precisely what assistants paraphrase. One or two placements — a local paper feature, a chamber-of-commerce writeup, a community sponsorship that gets covered — move the needle disproportionately.
- 4. Say the words on your website. A homepage that plainly states what you are and where (“family-run plumber in Princeton, NJ”), a page answering the questions customers actually ask, and LocalBusiness structured data.
- 5. Earn real community mentions. Reddit and neighborhood forums carry growing weight. Never fake these — one genuine “these folks fixed our furnace at 11pm” beats anything you could write yourself.
How long it takes
Retrieval-based answers can change within weeks of new reviews and mentions appearing. The model’s built-in knowledge refreshes more slowly — over months, as models are updated. That’s why the dashboard check is worth re-running periodically rather than treating one result as final.
How our check works — and its limits
The dashboard’s “Does AI recommend you?” check asks a leading AI assistant the exact question a customer would ask — “What are the best [your category] in [your area]?” — and reports whether your business is named, along with the assistant’s full answer. Honest caveat: AI answers vary by user, day, and phrasing, so treat the result as a signal, not a verdict. Mentioned is a great sign; not mentioned is a to-do list — the five moves above.
